Coverage

What makes up good home insurance?

An overview from the buildings base cover through contents to the optional extras – with no premium figures, by substance. The exact scope differs by insurer: the policy terms always prevail.

Pillar 1

Buildings

  • Fire, explosion, lightning
  • Storm, hail and further natural perils
  • Water damage from pipes
  • Structure, finishes, built-in elements, outbuildings

The base: at true rebuilding value – details: buildings vs. contents.

Pillar 2

Contents

  • Furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing
  • Burglary and robbery cover
  • Valuables – typically with limits
  • Garden and storage items – per the terms

A realistic sum from the home inventory – limits: valuables and cash.

Layer 3

Optional covers

  • Personal liability (e.g. a leak into the neighbour's flat)
  • Glass breakage
  • Assistance – the insurer's own tradesman
  • Garden, solar panels, smart devices and more

The life-situation layer – map: optional covers, liability.

The categories are indicative: insurers group covers differently (what is base cover with one is an optional extra with another). In comparisons it is therefore worth looking at them by substance.

The covers in one table

CoverWhat does it protect? The right question to ask
Fire and natural perilsThe big, rare losses: fire, explosion, lightning, stormExactly which perils are on the list?
Water damage from pipesBurst pipes, seepage, blockage floodingAre exposure and reinstatement works included?
Storm and hailRoof, windows and doors, shutters, garden structuresHow do the terms define a storm?
Burglary and robberyForcible theft of your contentsWhat security is expected – typically tied to the sum?
Glass breakageGlazing of windows, balconies, shower cabinsWhat limit and deductible apply?
Personal liabilityWhen you or a family member cause damage to othersHow high is the limit, and who is covered?
ValuablesJewellery, watches, cash, art – with limitsUp to what limit, under what storage conditions?
Garden, solar, devicesThe values around the house and the modern onesIs everything included at its declared value?
Special risksEarthquake, flood and the like – with separate rulesWhat exclusions and waiting periods apply?
AssistanceEmergency help: blockage, locks, glazingFor what, and up to what limit, can it be called?

The table is indicative and does not replace reading the terms – the policy-reading crash course and the exclusions map help with that.

And what is not home insurance's job

Home insurance protects your home and your personal liability. A condominium's common property – roof, stairwell, shared building systems – is the building's own insurance: see tarsashaz.biz (in Hungarian), and the boundary in where mine ends and the building's begins. Risks during construction and major renovation are a separate genre: epites.biz. Professional liability is not personal liability: felelosseg.biz. Protecting the repayments of a mortgage if the earner is lost is the job of credit life insurance, not home insurance: elet.biz. And a business's premises belong to commercial property insurance: vagyon.biz.
